Luminox watches need no external light source to "charge" the paint on the dial or hands in order to glow as do conventional luminous watches, nor do they require a push of a button to light the dial as do electro luminescent watches.

About Luminox
Luminox combines the finest tradition and precision of Swiss watchmaking with the durability demanded by US armed forces and the latest inventions in timepiece technology. The company initiated the development of small, person luminescent tracer lamps and was contacted by the U.S. Navy SEAL teams to build a dive watch for their use on night missions. After their popularity in the Navy grew, the Air Force asked Luminox to give rise to a watch distinctively for F-117 Nighthawk Stealth pilots.

The Luminox Story

AN AMERICAN SUCCESS STORY

Like galore other American success stories, LUMI•NOX came from a forward-thinking person realizing a need in the market and meeting it. Barry Cohen had been in the fashion watch business for rather galore time when he came all over a Swiss self-powered illumination system and knew that it would make watches more visible and more comfortable to read in low or no light situations. As a result, Cohen and a collaborator invented watches using this distinctive illumination scheme (called Luminox Light Technology) and LUMI•NOX was born back in 1989 (Lumi is Latin for light while Nox is Latin for night), driven by a commitment to offer cutting-edge luminescence and readability in it is line of high-performance sports watches.

The Navy SEALs and More
The Luminox Navy SEAL watch is the timepiece that made Luminox famous. The officer in charge of procurement for the Navy SEALs, Nick North, was asked to seek a more dependable watch for night missions and found the solution at a trade show where he came upon Luminox. He worked with Barry Cohen to create a watch distinctively for them and the Navy SEAL watch was born.

"Luminox had precisely the watch we were looking for – we only added a few little things," Nick North, Senior Public Safety Engineer and Operations Specialist, remembered. "We arranged to test a heap of and they worked great. We made a few changes, then the East Coast team started issuing them and the West Coast teams came on board."

luminox.watch1 swiss air partners After Luminox provided the watches to the SEALs, more elite units contacted them directly, while at the same time Luminox begun retail the watch throughout the country and the world. Luminox was then neared by US Air Force pilots flying the F-117 Nighthawk Stealth fighter jet. They were wearing the Navy SEAL timepieces, but chafed at the word "Navy" on the dial. Luminox then developed a watch for these pilots and neared Lockheed Martin, the makers of the F-117 Nighthawk for a picture of the plane to use in the catalogs that marketed the watches.

This original contact turned into an exclusive arrangement to manufacture Lockheed Martin timepieces, including watches devoted to the F-117 Nighthawk, F-16 Fighting Falcon, SR-111 Blackbird and the new F-22 Raptor.

The Rest of the Story
Throughout the following 20 years, Luminox has never strayed from it is mission which has been confirmed and validated by the a lot of elite military and law enforcement units that have adopted Luminox as usual equipment.

Luminox has expanded it is collection to include a assortment of styles, devised for the active consumer, the sportsman, law enforcement and military groups, divers and more. Currently, Luminox is circulated in 40 countries around the world and furnishes elite units all over the world. In addition, the man on the street has shown peculiar interest in Luminox, anxious to use the watches put to the test each single day – on the world’s most difficult jobs, figuring justifiedly that if they have been requested by, designed for and used by the Navy SEALs, they have to be capable to stand up to each day use.

luminox.watch2 swiss air partners The Technology
The Luminox Light Technology makes Luminox watches Always Visible – in fact, the engineering science Luminox uses provides 24/7 luminosity, no matter the conditions, for more than 25 years.

Most other watches use luminescent paint that has to be charged by a light source and fades very quickly, or a "push to light" system, where you push a button for battery-driven illumination.

Luminox, however, uses proprietary technology, in the past reserved for the military, that makes Luminox watches stand out, literally. Each Luminox watch features tiny gas lights (borosilicate glass capsules), which are always lit, on the hands, hour markers and when necessary, bezels. As a result of this distinctive technology, Luminox watches are always readable at a glance, no matter the conditions.

The U.S. military has long recognized the vantages of micro gas light roots and their use is mandated in procurement specification MIL-W-46374F. Being capable to read the watches in any conditions, even in total darkness, is an important requisite of numerous military and law enforcement agencies.

The U.S. Navy SEALs use the watches, as do U.S. Air Force pilots, FBI and ATF agents, Secret Service officers, Border Patrol units, Coast Guard officers, SWAT teams, as well as ordinary law enforcement officers, helicopter search and rescue pilots, professional divers and other groups.

The Luminox Light Technology system is hand used in each and each watch. Though more complicated, pricey and time consuming than normal luminescence, it is one of the things that makes Luminox watches special. This distinguishable technology and the further and added control steps Luminox mandates require extraordinary attention to detail and care in manufacturing.

What made me give this 5 stars was the price comparison. For the cash this watch is good quality & carries the tritium dial which is a nice if not necessary touch. It's far more brilliant than the now extinct radium dials.

The case and strap give each impression of being lasting even though I'm not in regards to to bash it around to find out. The standard finish is good and the watch is comfortable to wear.

The white face versus the black moulded case looks very good in my opinion. I mention this only because it's difficult to tell from the pictures on the web whether it'll look good in real life, but I think that it does.

I agree with the sentiment of the other reviewer in regards to the strap not being worth the cash they were asking for replacement. The strap is good sufficient but not incisively particular unless you're fanatical with regards to having the Luminox stamp on the buckle. The exercise of limiting the warranty to exclude the strap is a little poor, but I suspect widespread and not specific to Luminox.

One final niggle. If you thoroughly examine the dial actually (and I mean really) closely then you see that the second hand isn't utterly and utterly aligned with each second marker on the face. But you'd need to have a severe OCD problem to worry when it comes to this on a watch of this price.

Altogether very happy. Good price. Nice watch. Attractive tritium dial.

star50 tpng swiss air partnersgreat watch for the money
    By Michael P. Willis
I did a lot of comparison buying goods for a sporty yet classy watch with a bezel, and it came down to Swiss Army vs. Luminox. My decision was made when I found this watch on sale for almost $100 dollars less than list price (thanks, Amazon!) and well underneath the cost of the Swiss Army watches I was looking at. Some humans complain regarding the rubber wristband, but I like it. I'm sure it will break sooner or later, but no biggie. More importantly, the watch face itself is classy and easy to read. And it actually is bright in the dark! I love the fact that you don't have to press a button to illumine it. The bezel was a bit tough to rotate at first, but it's loosened up a bit since I initial got it. It may not be as esteemed as a metal band watch, but it suits me just fine.

I purchased this watch from Amazon in regards to 3 years ago. I wore this watch all through Basic Military Training and Tech School and haven't had any problems. The crystal is strong and the face is nice and bright. Great for Entry Control for the duration of dark hours because you don't have to take your hands off your weapon to check the time, there are no buttons to press! While the rubber watch band did break at the 3 year mark, it was only after I got the watch caught on a piece of equipment. I purchased a 22mm NATO watchband for $16 bucks and it looks great and will never break.
