Despite concern regarding the negative impacts of globalisation on the economies of OECD regions, notably the loss of formulating jobs and enterprise relocation, this report presents proof that region-specific vantages embedded in specialised firms, skilled labour and innovation capacity stay a substantial source of productivity gain for firms, even for the biggest multinational enterprises. A new geography of production is emerging, based around both old and new territorial hubs in OECD and non-OECD countries. National and territorial governments in OECD countries are looking for ways to make sure that regions maintain a competitory edge in industries that generate wealth and jobs. This report looks at how dissimilar regions are responding to these challenges and the systems they have adopted to support existent competitory vantages and to transform their sum totals to manufacture new competitory strengths.
