Joshua Fattal, one of three Americans detained by Iranian authorities after a hiking trek went awry, lived and worked at the Aprovecho Research Center near Cottage Grove for three years, a close friend said Sunday.

"He was the coordinator of our internship program," said Jeremy Roth in an e-mail. "Very nice guy. We're all praying for his safe return."

The Swiss Embassy in Tehran was working Sunday to learn more when it comes to the fate of Fattal and two other Americans through it is contacts with the Iranian Foreign Ministry, spokeswoman Nadine Olivieri said.
