First, John is a good friend. So you may consider this review in that context. Next, I haven't read each word, looking for things I might disagree with. So this review is based on my skimming of the entire book and reading all of the highlighted sectionalizations on Safety, plus the highlighted subdivisions provided by others.
The subdivisions on safety are based on the same time proven counsel provided through the League of American Bicyclists Certified Instructors. This counsel is provided in each chapter and is applicable to the topic covered. For example, the not universally understood, but potentially severe condition of hyponatremia is discussed in the chapter entitled "Fueling the Distance Cyclist".
Dan McGehee's contribution titled "Balancing Life" is one of my favorites, since Dan perceives how easy it may be for the bike to become a "mistress", and he provides helpful counsel on minimizing that potential while maximizing yours.

I have done Paris-Brest-Paris, finished the Kona Ironman 8 times, and done Team RAAM in 2000. As a cyclist, triathlete, and novice coach for sundry friends from time to time, READ THIS BOOK for precise information, effective training tips, sound advise, and a comprehensive, intellectual approach to distance cycling. Author John Hughes has finished RAAM and a heap of multi-day events on the bike himself and he is an accomplished writer. These traits combine into a in a unique manner understandable approach to distance cycling. If you have time to read only one book, read this one!

My good friend, and ultracycling guru, John Hughes, has boiled down a wealth of theoretical and direct ultracycling experience into the extreme readable book on what a cyclist needs to know when giving careful consideration to a ride of more than 100 miles.

Ultracyclists have learned a lot in the last 25 years, John Hughes has done an impressive occupation of condensing this info into a very easy to read format. Wish I had this book at my side when I started ultracycling!
