Review"The writers do an splendid occupation situating their study and the conception of participation within the broader body of exploration and theory on journalism, but likewise offer utile perceptivenesses into the practical realities of how journalists are addressing an growingly active audience in the newsroom today." (Journalism, 23 February 2012)

"Like it is authors, half of whom are both journalists and scholars, the book is also a hybrid - on the one hand, it serves as a robust piece of empirical exploration and, on the other, it is an splendid textbook for journalism students. This is evidently a deliberate device by the writers who wish to make a contribution to cognition without alienating potential readers. The book is written in clear, intimate resembling more of a journalistic style than an academic one, and each chapter ends with questions inviting the reader (or lecturer) to talk about and probe issues. There is likewise an effective glossary which explains terms which may be unfamiliar to those starting out in the field."

By investigating an emergent set of participatory exercises in a veritably cross-national context, the writers of this book show both theoretically and practically how the production of news is altering around the world. From the Back CoverWho makes the news in a digital age?  Recent years have seen a dramatic alter in the kinship among online media and the ‘audience’, and user-generated content is much more widely employed. The media space and control over what it holds are shared by bloggers, social networking pages, as well as conventional news outlets. Such an environs requires a dramatic conceptual and practical shift for journalists, who face a rapid and radical decline in their power to oversee the flow of information. The capacity to productively integrate user contributions within established media spaces is getting a critical skill.

This book is based on a collaborative exploration project by a team of journalism scholars from Europe, North America and Israel. It provides perceptivities into how journalists at internet sites affiliated with leading national newsprints in ten Western democracies are thinking about, and dealing with, the inclusion of content invented and published by the people once viewed merely as ‘the audience.’   The journalist’s control over media space, which was based to a huge extent on their access to the means of disseminating information, has evaporated, and the space is open to everyone. Participatory Journalism goes right to the heart of what journalists do, what journalism is, and what the role of news is in   contemporary democratic society that has gone digital.
