| | | Dog (Canis lupus familiaris) | The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog (German: Grosser Schweizer Sennenhund or French: Grand Bouvier Suisse) is a dog breed which was produced in the Swiss Alps. The name Sennenhund refers to humans called Senn or Senner, dairymen and herders in the Swiss Alps. Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs are almost surely the result of indigenous dogs mating with huge Mastiff types brought to Switzerland by alien settlers. At one time, the breed was believed to have been amidst the most frequent in Switzerland.[269] It was assumed to have closely passed from physical life out by the late 19th century, since it is work was being done by other breeds or machines, but was rediscovered in the early 1900s.[277] The breed is huge and heavy-boned with unbelievable physical strength, but is still agile sufficient to carry out the all-purpose farm duties it was in the first place used for.[287] Its breed standard calls for a black, white, and rust colored coat. The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is sociable, active, calm, and dignified, and loves being part of the family. It is comparatively healthful for it is size and have a tendancy to have far less difficultnesses than more usual breeds in it is size range.[307] Among the four Sennenhund, or Swiss mountain dogs, this breed is considered the oldest, and is likewise the largest. |
