Make sure you a buy a good map.... By Jonathan Bradley I just came back from a trip to the Dolomites and fortunately I had a friend who had galore German hiking books as well. This book has galore severe limitations. 1) There is no index so if you are looking for a specific city or area to begin or end a hike you have to scour the the book to find anything. The publisher took the cheap way out and used the final pages for ads rather of an index. Sorry but I'm spoiled by other guide books. 2) They use hand drawn maps so you have no idea regarding elevation or topography. The general map that holds all of hikes is likewise hand drawn so you MUST have a good map of the area. No topo maps are provided in the book so get a good map or you'll be sorry. I like to use guide books as starting points and make up my own hikes as well and this book is no aid in that department, you have to have a good map to use in conjunction with this book. 3) The author uses bizarre descriptions so read amidst the lines. When she writes that you will be hiking on a "giddy ridge" that means there is a sheer drop on one side. If she writes that you need to use your hands that means you have to do a great deal of climbing. 4) Poor organization. To save costs the publisher combined maps of a good deal of hikes so the info that you need isn't always readily available. Again, I'm spoiled by the other outstanding guides out there.
If you may read German, Italian or French stay clear of this book, there are better titles out there-skip this one and move on. If you only understand English and you plan on hiking you still have to buy this book because there is not one thing else out there. Pretend it's 1965 when this book would be the top of the line. 3 of 3 humans found the following review helpful.
Hiking Guide for the Dolomites By Long time Mac user A good reference to plan a trip and seems to be rather usable while taking the hikes. I wish there would be a better indication where the hike may be shortened utilizing the galore cable car/chair lifts in the area 0 of 0 persons found the following review helpful.
Good planning guide! By Rodger Raubach Although I haven't had occasion to genuinely use this guidebook "in the field," I believe that it will be very utile in helping me plan an upcoming trip to the Dolomites. The volume is pocket-size, and thereby portable.
The illustrations are full-color and the printing occupation nicely executed. There is rather a bit of utile data at the beginning that is directed to rank beginners in mountain walking; this is evidently utile to some. There are likewise a heap of good secondary references for obtaining further and added local information.
All things considered--a very utile little book; I'm satisfied with the purchase. See all 4 client reviews... |
