Switzerland is a noteworthy country, half of whose territory lies in the Alps. This is the history of one Swiss alpine village. Raising cattle and making cheese brought modest wealth to it is engaged in a struggle peasants until a damaging Napoleonic invasion brought revolution and poverty. Well-being was tardily restored by a democratic unification of Switzerland. By Erin Flory
As I am a family history nut, I've been looking for books in regards to the history and culture of Switzerland to learn more in regards to my ancestors' experiences, and have found how rare books when it comes to Switzerland are.

This book was a outstanding find! While it focuses on the area of Chateau-d'Oex, much of what Mr. Birmingham writes applies to other areas of Switzerland as well! Not only does he give good descriptions of the major political, economic, and religious events, but he provides galore details of the day to day lives of the persons of Switzerland. This included courting rituals (bundling!) and marriage patterns, daily and seasonal routines of dairy farmers, etc.

A will have to for any individual who is fascinated in learning more with regards to Swiss history and culture! I hope Mr. Birmingham plans to proceed his exploration and writing in regards to Switzerland.
